Emeli Sandé stakes her claim as a major artist in the making with this gritty, very powerful video for Daddy by multi-MVA nominee AG Rojas.
Set in the badlands of Las Vegas, hard-hitting images of drug addiction and criminal activity are the backdrop to Emeli’s relationship with a wayward lover. AG Rojas handles this fast-moving narrative with aplomb – further evidence, following his MVA-nominated Chase & Status video for Hitz and Calvin Harris’ Bounce (which he co-directed with Vince Haycock) that he’s the real deal.
“Emeli wanted a video that dealt with addictions and personal demons,” AG explains. “The first thing that came to mind was Las Vegas, a place ripe with broken people. I decided to set this just outside of the Strip, and not create the stereotypical vision of Vegas. The track is simultaneously moody and explosive, so we crafted a montage of moments that would reflect this. The end result is worth the skin rashes from the shitty Vegas hotels.”

Yeah, its very cool, great locations, top camera, edit, great performance from Emeli, all the above, but why, oh why, do we see the same old stereotypes??. Black (and mixed race ) men committing robberies, taking drugs etc. White people do those things too!. It would have been nice to have seen a more contemporary take on urban life without the same old cliches and Americanized glamorization of gangsters, even if the ending is ‘positive’ it still says that white is alright and non-white is badbwoy!! Looks great though, no disputing that.
