Radio Soulwax is the big new project by Soulwax – aka 2ManyDJs – who have created 24 one-hour of their celebrated mixes to be accessed via the new Radio Soulwax app for iPhone, iPad and Android, and on their website.
Each one-hour mix come with accompanying visuals, mostly based on animated the record sleeves of the original tracks. “We call them mixes, but in reality they are more like musical films based on the record sleeves,” say Soulwax (that’s the Dewaele brothers David and Stephen) in the App Store listing.
Soulwax developed the concepts for the films with UK artist Fergus Purcell aka Fergadelic. A new show is to be added every week for the next few months, and the films can be streamed online and via the app in the manner of a radio show, or downloaded. They are not just animated record sleeves either.Three shows that have just been added are by Partizan directors Kinga Burza, Daniel Brereton and new Partizan signings James Willis and Jack Newman.
‘Librarian Girl’ by Kinga Burza
The Soulwax mix is based on library music – the real gems to be found among all the garbage. “Library records have since become very sought-after, and we were lucky enough to have found a big bag of them about 10 years ago,” says Soulwax. “Instead of animating the sleeves we have filmed our librarian here at RSWC while she goes about her working day.”
