Devlin’s Our Father by Jimi Crayon

Tuesday, 3. May 2011 - 11:15 am

Jimi Crayon delivers his multi-media extravaganza for Dagenham grime act Devlin, translating the lyric via nine TV sets – with computers, old video recorders and speakers making up an impressive cube sculpture – in the absence of the artist.

“I really wanted to build something sculptural and unusual,” says Jimi. “We used hundreds of different parts to build our creation – including speakers, suitcases, cables, VHS and cassette tapes. There were nine laptops hidden behind the sculpture each feeding a different edit of the video to a specific TV.

“Although post work was needed, we managed to get the whole video playing in realtime across all nine screens. It was really impressive to see old school analogue equipment working with brand new Macbooks. There was lots of technicalities to consider but it was well worth the loss of brain cells.”
