I Blame Coco’s Self Machine by Alex Smith
Friday, 11. June 2010 - 1:30 pm

For I Blame Coco’s second single (from forthcoming album The Constant), Alex Smith picks the odd location of an empty swimming pool (how scarey are they?) and delivers this memorable promo with a nice bit of slo-mo…

Let’s be honest. This is rather dissapointing. No expense spared.
Must do better than this.

I love it!!
If only for that beautiful shot of the girl with the little funny black hat on as she looks up – her eyes are great.
there’s something working here – the light perhaps – nice video – feels natural.

This was a great post, I hope you will write some more of these in the future….

I like it. Coco has a compelling face and voice. The track is tricky and ably navigated by Alex Smith. Beautiful lighting an’ camera work from Mr Robbie Ryan. It is an idea that doesn’t really go anywhere but you know what, I really don’t mind – it’s lovely work all round!

whats wrong with something just looking beautiful?

Beautiful it may be, but some sort of emotional engagement with the piece would be nice. It’s just seems like these sort of videos are churned out one after another. It in no way stands out particulary for an artist trying to make it’s mark.

On the contrary I think it’s quite visually emotive – sets a nice “vibe” and the pics work on a feel good factor lavel.
It’s subtlety is its charm in this respect. It’s not the best example of a video of nothing making something of itself and indeed most are churned out but somehow I think this one makes it.
I’m definitely quick to criticise pics that don’t work for the song and I hate videos that imitate other peoples work (I think directors like to call it homage – but let’s face it – it’s copying). There’s a ton of directors out there able to make pretty pics but shit videos – and somehow – I dont know how – this one has a good eye working for it – could be a real director here.

Gorgeous and understated…A nice foil for the artist herself.
