Bonobo’s Eyes Down by Steve Glashier
Wednesday, 31. March 2010 - 3:59 pm
Following his slowburning one-shot performance video for The Keeper last year, Steve Glashier is back with Bonobo for Eyes Shut – also with Andreya Triana on vocals.
This time he captures choreographer dancer Portia Van De Braam in performance in the woods. That’s it, but its beautiful. And it just keeps getting more idyllic.

Simple, but quite mesmerising. Considering it’s just a woman dancing about in the woods, it doesn’t get boring. Although the bird bit was a little ropey…

Interesting idea, very mysterious.

Yawn. Honestly. If you’re going to use a dancer and use choreography, then at least make decent use of it. Dancers are woefully misused in music videos and no-one really seems to understand how to translate movement onto the screen. It’s not enough to just film dance because you never get under the skin of the choreography, there needs to be a more intimate relationship between the camera and the material. Dance is about expressing emotion through movement and for some reason filmmakers never seem to be able to translate that very well. It’s rarely done that well. The photography is beautiful and this is a very capable piece of filmmaking but it doesn’t really improve the music and I just don’t think it’s a great use of the material.
