Delphic’s Halcyon by Dave Ma
Wednesday, 3. February 2010 - 1:45 pm

Taken from the critically acclaimed Acolyte album and released to coincide with their first extensive UK tour, the Mancunian alt-dance act enlist Dave Ma for the second time to work his magic on Halcyon.
His first multi-MVA-nominated video for the band for This Momentary is an impressionistic document on life in and around Chernobyl in Russia, two decades after the world’s biggest peacetime nuclear disaster. Dave and crew, again including DoP Ross McLennan, didn’t travel quite that far for Halcyon, but a slate quarry in North Wales in mid-winter was arguably even bleaker. However the result, featuring the band and dancers in beautiful gowns styled by Sian Jenkins, is just as stunning.
“I used the description of the term ‘Halcyon’ (a term for peace or calmness) as inspiration for a dance video in an old slate quarry,” says Dave. “It hailed three times on the shoot day which made things tough to say the least. I really have to take my hat off to the band, the entire crew and especially the dancers for enduring the ridiculously harsh conditions in order for us to get the most out of our short winter shoot day.”
And as with This Momentary a great edit by Vid Price and grade by James Tillett at Prime Focus.

Another one bites the dust!
A beatiful piece of work.
Is it by chance the same location as Battle ‘Tonto’?
4. February 2010 - 12:13 am
Sorry, Battles, before I get slammed and corrected
4. February 2010 - 11:31 am
Beautiful work.

Not meaning to go too much against the grain but it just didn’t do a lot for me.
I reckon the same result could have been achieved with a still photograph.
Editing was solid if a bit by the numbers.
Grading, slick
But the whole concept just didn’t do it for me compared to Ma’s last outing with Delphic.
(Still think that This Momentary was/is one of the loveliest videos I’ve seen in some while.)

framing & edit could have been more sensitive to the choreography & tempo of the track
4. February 2010 - 3:27 pm
boring stuff…his jobs always feel the same!!!I’m not feeling this at all!!

I tentatively agree with jonas.
I actually found the grade so very flat, and the concept and styling are very much stuck in Ma’s comfort zone: nomads and rags.
Nice – but a tad dull.

The video is poetic and moving…However, Chornobyl is in Ukraine, not Russia.
