Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed by OneInThreeThe first major release by Ellie Goulding, widely touted for big things this year and already the winner of a Brit award, gets a strong launch with a performance-based video by Ross Cooper and Bugsy Riverbank Steel of OneInThree, with added Muybridge-style visual effects they customized themselves from a popular TV sports package – see below.

The video was shot at delightful inner London wedding venue Finsbury Town Hall – and the stars are on Ellie’s hands as well as in her eyes.

Bugsy and Ross of OneInThree on the making of the video for Ellie Golding’s Starry Eyed

“We were really into the production of this track and our idea for the video came from us wanting to visualise the echoes, reverses and reverberations of the song. We discovered a technique called StroMotion™ that is traditionally used in sporting analysis.

Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed by OneInThree“The effect traces its lineage all the back to one of our photographic heroes, all-round strange man and acquitted murderer Eadweard Muybridge. The off-the-shelf software didn’t give us the level of control we needed, so we worked out how to create the effect ourselves in After Effects.

“Immediately after we won this job, Ellie won the Brits newcomer award, and this resulted in that rarest and most fortuitous of pop promo circumstances: the budget actually went up after the video was commissioned. This meant we could afford the luxury of cutting with the ever awesome James Rose at Cut and Run and Nathan Parker had some money to give our lovely, if a little faded-round-the-edges location a bit more of a pop sheen.

“We designed costumes for the dancers that would look really great frozen in motion and would be as time-consuming as possible to rotoscope. The fantastic Ross McLennan made everything, especially Ellie, look beautiful and we were really happy with the charming performance that we captured on the first day back after the New Year.

Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed by OneInThree“We did all the effects in-house. The post process was a mad rush as ever, with over sixty effects shots done in couple of days. During that process Ellie won the BBC Sound of 2010 – which was great for her, but meant our offline had to ‘air to over 500 people’ at the label. We were dreading over 500 separate feedback emails with tweaks, which thankfully never came. Many thanks to everyone involved.”

no doubt a lot of people will see this on VIVA and other such music channels.

    but come on.

this is an lesson in how to turn 20k into £500.

is anyone who worked on this video proud of what they did…….?

no cause they have pay the mortgage.

but someone is accountable for this rubbish…….someone actually thought the images from the monitors looked good.

it wasnt the DOP, the 1st AD, the directors…….who the hell was it.

    someone be accountable…….stop this.

in a time when budgets are tiny surely every penny should be wisely spent.

this looks like it was made by students at wimbledon A-level media centre for the blind.

if such a place exists i apologise

  2. hmm

this is actually really bad…why are both her videos as generic and as lazy as possible? why when she is a superb talent?

    Oh dear

The other video i’m sure was a fraction of this budget and manages to be better, go figure

‘this is an lesson in how to turn 20k into £500′ – couldn’t agree more kipper

No, this is simply a lesson in how to make a bad video. Artist to watch in 2010, yes, video to watch in 2010, no, not this year, or any other year for that matter.

Terrible styling, lighting and FX totally working against what is a nice dancey pop tune. Poor Ellie!

“We were dreading over 500 separate feedback emails with tweaks, which thankfully never came.”

Presumably because they were all too stunned or – more likely thought it was a piss-take. Maybe this is. Maybe it’s all an ironic in-joke by OneInThree and Colonel Blimp?

I have to concur with the general consensus – this is quite terrible…

Nasty colour scheme, flat as a pancake lighting, and styling that really does the poor girl no favours.

Surely not ideal in pop’s newest hope.

  8. shocker

this is just absolutely schoolboy on every front…

    production, lighting, styling, direction.

    total clanger. bonafide p***take.

    Cringe worthy video…

The previous one was an ok low budget ‘keeper’, and yet they then go on to commission this for how much more???

For all the media praise being showered on her it is remarkable that her that they have missed this golden opportunity to produce a stunning video to match instead they have made this embarrassing mess!!!

This is a beautiful, elegant video which is perfectly suited to the song and as importantly, the audience. Getting an young, emerging artists to appear so naturally in front of the camera is an art in itself. The effects that the directors have used are both considered and intelligent and the end result is simply stunning. A budget does not go far and they have made a great video for such a small amount. Carry on the great work OneinThree, can’t wait to see what comes next.

I really can’t understand all of the bad feedback, I think it’s really impressive and loved it the first time I saw it.

  12. Imagineer

The song’s called Starry-Eyed? Well, let’s stick some stars on her hands and chuck in some cringe-worthy star effects over the top!

    Yep.

Very “considered and intelligent”. Not to mention “simply stunning”.

this thread tastes of sour grapes
