BUG 13: Ruarri Joseph’s More Than Most by Sam Walker

Compelling and controversial video for singer-songwriter Ruarri Joseph by Sam Walker, moon- lighting from his usual role as creative director at ad agency Fallon.
Sam has documented a Thai boxing match, with two cameras showing the perspective of each fighter, presented side-by-side on the screen in identical timelines. But the element that makes Walker’s debut video really powerful is that the fight is between two small boys.
Sam, who’s directed some of Fallon’s promos for the BBC – including two new Blast ads – and a couple of shorts, has had this double camera idea for a while.
Richard Skinner, former creative director at Atlantic (where he worked with Ruarri) and now at Fallon, briefly returned to commissioning to put singer and director together. Then Sam found a Thai boxing tournament held in a nightclub in Crawley with children’s contests on the undercard.
Part of the strength of his idea is its simplicity – that made it easy to explain to those involved in the filming. And the unflinching way the cameras follow each child’s progress demands a reaction.
